    • The 1911 census only lists 4 of Lewis and Esther's children as Rose Vichinsky, Hyman Vichinsky, Ruben Vichinsky and Nartram Vichinsky, not Monty, Morry, Becky or Joseph.

Were Monty, Morry, Becky and Joseph by Lewis's 'other' wife, or were they born after 1911?

Their address (Apr 2, 1911) with Rose, was 2. Jordans Alley River Street, Old Brompton, Kent, England

  • Notes
    • Lewis (and Esther?) left the Ukraine by boat and arrived in Chatham through London docks. I assume they were married before having Rose, who they brought with them, although Diane said that Rose may have been born on the Poland/Russian border.

How did he settle and make connections with others? Presumably at Chatham synagogue.

They lived in Chatham High St. initially. His eldest son George was born in East Aldgate. Did George too live in Chatham with Lewis (Harry), Esther and Rose? The other children were born perhaps after the 1911 cenus, and were they all to Esther?

He appears to have changed his name to Harry Lewis (record from Chatham Synagogue)

It appears Lewis Vichinsky is buried in Bethnal Green.

How was he dressed? Not, we think in the long black robes of a Hasidic Jew. There was no reform movement at the time, but dad does not remember fervent Judaism. They did not seem to have gone to the synagogue much.

Was Esther his first or second wife? Was his other wife's name Sarah or Hilda?

What were the dates of birth of his other children? After 1911? [6]
    • Dad went over to Lewis for Pesach
Lived in Cambridge Heath Rd, Bethnal Green Esast Aldgate?

Dad lived in Stoke Newington, 54 Forberg Rd, N16
Then in 113 Otley drive, Ilford from June 1947
    • Lewis and Esther must have come to England (from Ukraine) after 1902, when their daughter Rose/Rosie was born, as she came with them.
    • Lewis Vichinsky changed his name to Harry Lewis. What year?

Thank you for your enquiry regarding your ancestors, Esther, Lewis and Hyman Vishinky. Indeed, your great grandmother is buried at the Chatham Memorial Synagogue burial ground. From the survey I have, it states that she died on 22 November 1933, age 54.

Your great grandfather Lewis Vishinsky, tailor, is recorded in the summary of the 1939 census (it will be fully open in 2039) as Harry Lewis (b. 27/05/1880), living in the High Street of Chatham with his second wife (?), Rose (b.23/07/1879).

I presume, you have Lewis and Esther's details from the 1911 census, which includes a record of your grandfather Hyman being 4 at the time. (it is available via ancestry database). The family do not appear in the 1901 census, so I would assume they arrived to the UK between 1901 and early 1911 (census would have taken place in spring - March/April).

It looks like he and Rose moved to London, as I can see his death recorded in Bethnal Green, London in July-September quarter 1956. If you'd like to order his death certificate, you can do so from the General Register office, quoting the reference: volume 5c p117

Also, you might be interested to know that your great grandfather appears in my forthcoming book Foreigners, Aliens, Citizens: Medway and its Jewish community, 1066-1939, that is being released next month.

The short story relating to your great grandfather concerns his conscription to the army during the WW1. If you're interested in the book, which will give you an idea about the area and the atmosphere the Jewish community lived in, please let me know, and I'll notify you when it's available. If not, let me know still, and I'll provide you with the story.

Regarding deaths, I told you my mother, Faye, lost her father, Sam Goodman, 11 weeks after I was born in May 1956, and this was subsequently followed by her grandfather's death - her mother Rose's own father - six weeks after that.

    6. [S9] Phillip Lewis.
