74 | Yes, my mother's side, the one we're related on, were Ashkenazi, my father's side Sephardi, from Portugal, after they were chucked out of Spain during the Inquisiton. And yes, the family name was Vischinksy. My grandmother Rose, George's sister, came to the UK when she was a baby. That side of the family is related to the pianist Vladimir Horowitz, and you can see the family likeness in photos of him. (Great for me, I used to be a classical pianist!) I recently had my family tree traced back by the Sephardi organisation in North London to see if I can apply for a Portuguese passport, and part of the heritage featured Amsterdam. Hymie / George had a sister, born in Lithuania, then. Rose Vischinsky Rose was Diane's grandmother There were lots of brothers - 5? 6? one died as a baby, I think - and Rose was the only girl. Funnily enough, one of the brothers was called Mark, and he used to live next door to us with his wife Ida. My dad Phil Messias was a taxi driver, and subsequently became Chairman of what was then the largest radio taxi service in Europe, Dial A Cab. And this on having left school at 14! Diane is related to George, who was a brother to her grandmother, Rose. Diane is not related to Ray at all through blood. Her father, Phil, died in 1993, 4 days before her son was 1 year-old. Her mother's name was Goodman. Not Heckman. There's a mistake on David and Eva Heckman? Yes indeed! My mother's parents were Rose and Samuel Rose and Sam Goodman Rose wasn't the only girl! Rebecca (Becky) lived in Margate - when I was about 10, I went with Rose to pay her a visit. Ruby? Doesn't ring a bell, sadly. Why did I think Rose was the only girl? Do you have any dates of death? I think they came to the UK by boat. BTW, my mother Faye's real name was Fanny. When she died, her partner went with my brother to register her death, and there was no trace of her on the records. It suddenly occurred to my brother what her real name was, and voila! (Her partner nearly fell off his chair - he had no idea!) | Messias, Diane (I250)
